Casa Buonarroti

Michelangelo’s tomb is one of the featurs best loved and most admired by visitors to Santa Croce. Michelangelo’s fascinating life and art is revealed in all its unparalleled uniqueness by a dual visit to the basilica of Santa Croce and the Casa Buonarroti.

Casa Buonarroti and Santa Croce

Your encounter with Michelangelo can become even more meaningful if you include a visit to the Casa Buonarroti, a 17th century palazzo lying only a stone’s throw from the basilica – a palazzo that recalls and celebrates the genius of Michelangelo while also being a sumptous Baroque creation in its own right and hosting the family’s rich art collections. Those collections  include two celebrated marble reliefs that are absolute masterpieces of Michelangelo’s youth: the Madonna of the Stairs testifying to his enthusiastic study of Donatello’s work, and the Battle of the Centaurs, an eloquent token of his undying admiration for Classical art, carved between 1490 and 1492 when, from the ages of fifteen and seventeen, he frequented the Garden of San Marco under the protection of Lorenzo the Magnificent.
